Aims and Scope

New Zealand Sociology (NZS) is an independent, open access, peer-reviewed journal that showcases a broad range of sociological scholarship of relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Pacific region. Published by the Sociological Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (SAANZ), NZS promotes critical engagement with contemporary sociological debates, practice, and public issues. As a place-based journal which is independent from the commercial publishers, NZS is committed to strengthening equity in representation and participation in sociological publishing, including actively supporting Māori and Pacific scholarship, as well as migrant and minoritised voices.

NZS provides a forum for empirical, theoretical, comparative, historical, and policy-oriented sociology. We welcome original research articles drawing on qualitative and quantitative methods; articles that advance sociological theory; and pieces that speak to the changing social world through research notes, debate-style contributions, and timely commentaries. NZS also publishes book reviews and encourages proposals for special issues and special sections, especially those that foster dialogue, broaden participation, and advance inclusive, culturally responsive sociological scholarship.

NZS accepts original manuscripts only. Submissions will be considered on the condition that they have not been previously published and are not currently under review elsewhere. NZS welcomes a range of submission types:

  • Research articles (8000 words excluding references)
  • Book reviews (2000 words)
  • Book review essays (5000 words)
  • Research notes (2000 words)
  • Commentary (2000 words)
  • Polemics
  • Orbituary
  • PhD summaries

PhD summaries: NZS publishes an annual collection of summaries of recently completed PhD theses to showcase and increase the visibility of sociological scholarship by emerging researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand. We invite PhD candidates and graduates who have submitted and/or successfully defended their dissertation to submit a thesis summary to NZS.
